One of the reasons why the Mazda Miata is so beloved by enthusiasts is because its chassis balance is so good that many have claimed that it is like driving a go-kart. TikTok user Ttptng (real name Tyler Atkin) decided to take that claim seriously. One day, Atkin posted a TikTok video titled “Miata kart?” and in it, he took a Nintendo Wii steering wheel accessory used for Mario Kart Wii and attached it to the steering boss of his real life Mazda Miata Mk1.
The clip went viral with 3.1 million views, over 200,000 likes, over 5,000 shares, and nearly a thousand comments. Once his followers saw what he had done they encouraged him to go further, attaching even more Nintendo Wii accessories to his Miata.
After the Mario Kart Wii steering wheel, Atkin replaced the stock gear shift knob with a Wii nunchuck controller. Then, he replaced the e-brake handle with a Wii baseball bat accessory. After that, he made a custom floor mat from a Wii Fit Yoga mat.
Eventually, Atkin swapped out the Miata’s stereo head unit with an actual Nintendo Wii console. Although, it’s currently not hooked up to a display. With so many Nintendo Wii parts installed, Atkins has officially nicknamed his car the “Wiiata.”
Eventually, Atkins actually drove his Mazda with the Wii steering wheel. Afterward Atkin’s admitted that driving with the plastic steering wheel was a “horrendous experience.”
In an interview with IGN, Atkins explained what drove him to perform the modification in the first place. ” I just like to mess about with stuff; keeps me busy and I thought I’d record it,” said Atkins. “I put a Wii wheel on about three weeks ago just for something to do and put it on TikTok, told my missus the video would get one million views as a joke, and there’s now two or three videos over three million.”
While we don’t recommend anyone reading this perform similar modifications to any vehicle they intend to drive on public roads, we do appreciate Atkin’s commitment to a bit.
What really would have impressed us is if Atkins figured out how to get his Miata to shoot red turtle shells that automatically hone-in on people that purposely drive 45 mph in the carpool lane.
